Title: Communication Skills for the Professional Certificate
Effective Year: 2014
Effective Semester: Fall
Justification for Development of the Degree/Certificate: Certificate will enable students to pursue a credential which may help them in current or future employment. Communication skills are one of the most highly desired skills sought by employers today. A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education summarized the results of two recent surveys, one by the Association of American Colleges and Universities which found that 93% of employers survey found that the ability to communicate clearly was more important than an undergraduate's major. The other survey was done by The Chronicle and found that employers said college graduates were most lacking in "written and oral communication skills". Additionally the National Association of Colleges and Employers' Job Outlook 2013 survey employers ranked as the top skill desired in new college graduate hires as the "ability to verbally communicate with persons inside and outside the organization".

Students seeking a transfer degree will also be able to earn a certificate during their course of study as this certificate will be stacked into a new A.A. in Communication Studies degree which will be submitted shortly.

Target Populations: Transfer students, or students wishing to improve communication skills. Students will have a credential to ensure employers they have significant training in communication skills.

Projected Employment Opportunities: This certificate would not lead to a particular employment opportunity, but would give students significant training in highly sought after communication skills.
Projected Impact on Existing Programs within the District or State: Very little. Enrollment in COM courses may increase slightly.
Evidence to Support Major Institutional Planning Priorities and Directions: The new certificate program would support the following strategic goals:

(1) Ensure broad access to high-quality innovative educational programs, services and training opportunities for Pinal County residents;

(2) Improve student retention, persistence, completion and job placement;

(3) Optimize fiscal resources that support the needs and expectations of students and the community;

(4) Contribute to the economic vitality, workforce development, and job training needs of Pinal County and surrounding region.

Rationale: The new Communication Certificates are a result of Dr. Helmich's direct vision and goal in increasing Work Force Development programming.
Timeline for Implementation: Certificate offered beginning Fall 2014
