Student Learning Outcomes: | 1. Construct aesthetic paintings using a variety of subject matter, tools, media, and techniques as well as accurately employing the principles of design and creative problem solving. (1,2,3,4)
2. Modify tube colors to derive the specific hues, values, and intensities of colors as observed in various historical subjects and for personal expression. (1,2,3) 3. Develop individual style and aesthetic interpretation while evaluating the effectiveness of form and content. (1,2,3,4,5,6) |
Objectives: | Competency 1 Create representational paintings using techniques and strategies for objective painting.
Objective 1.1 Evaluate thumbnail sketches of the subject using the principles of design to determine the composition of the painting. Objective 1.2 Construct an under-drawing of the subject on a primed or toned canvas with vine charcoal to record the basic contours and placement of the subject. Objective 1.3 Apply a monochromatic wash to accurately record the value pattern of the subject. Objective 1.4 Block-in native color corresponding to the value pattern of the wash. Objective 1.5 Modify the painting because of evaluating the effect of marking, edge, color, value, and expressive effect. Competency 2 Compose paintings with a variety of techniques and media. Objective 2.1 Construct painting supports from panels, stretcher bars, canvas, and gesso. Objective 2.2 Modify paint texture and consistency using various solvents, medium, varnishes, and textural additives. Objective 2.3 Develop paintings using direct techniques such as alla prima and retinal techniques. Objective 2.4 Develop paintings using indirect techniques using imprimatur, glazes, and scumbling. Objective 2.5 Experiment with paintings considering the expressive nature of marking, impasto, smooth, thin, broken color, impressionistic, and hard-edged techniques. Competency 3: Develop paintings using co-primaries and white to match specific hue, value, and saturation from observation of the subject. Objective 3.1 Select colors from specific co-primaries about thermal value/color temperature of the subject. Objective 3.2 Employ various mediums to modify saturation, opacity, and transparency. Objective 3.3 Modify value by use of mediums and by addition of opaque white. Competency 4 Create compositions that demonstrate the effective application of design elements and principles. Objective 4.1 Compose representational and non-representational paintings employing elements and principles of design. Objective 4.2 Manipulate the subject to create a sense of visual balance. Objective 4.3 Apply the principle of dominance and subordination to create emphasis Objective 4.4 Apply the principles of edge, line, speed, and direction to infer a sense of visual movement. Competency 5 Utilize the classroom critiques to help edit work into a professional level portfolio. Objective 5.1 Evaluate own and peers work based on the applied principles of design. Objective 5.2 Compile a physical and digital portfolio of best work. Objective 5.3 Prepare to present a professional portfolio for exhibition |
