Building Construction Technology Certificate
Semester Hours:  34
Effective Term: Fall 2016
Prerequisites: MAT 082 and RDG 094 or equivalent scores on the math and reading placement tests.
Corequisites: None


Program Description: Prepares students for entry-level career in the home building industry and union apprenticeships. The student will work on active, hands-on projects that combine carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills. Student must enroll in 2 consecutive semesters. To complete this program student must commit to full time enrollment.

Course Requirements
To earn a certificate, a student must meet the prerequisites and pass all of the following courses:

BCT115 Construction Math and Blueprints (3)
BCT120 Plumbing Fundamentals for Construction (4)
BCT125 Electrical Fundamentals for Construction (4)
BCT130 Carpentry Fundamentals for Construction (6)
BCT151 Applied Construction Technology I (6)
BCT152 Applied Construction Technology II (5)
BCT155 Professional Development for Construction (3)


Students must earn:
a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale;
at least one-third of the Certificate credits from CAC.

Program Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Application Level) Apply OSHA regulations and safe practices related to construction work sites, including safety-first attitude; accident reduction; housekeeping; tool safety; hazardous chemicals and hazard communication; power equipment, walking working surfaces and personal protective equipment.

2. (Application Level) Solve measurement and math problems relevant to construction.

3. (Evaluation Level) Compare and contrast elements of construction: including materials, techniques, and mechanical options such as heating and cooling.

4. (Application Level) Perform Lay out of a small building and perform rough in: including frame and installation of doors, windows, flooring, and plumbing systems.

5. (Application Level) Perform Finish work for a project according to code, including framing and covering the roof, finishing non-load-bearing walls, ceiling finish, and installing electrical devices and fixtures.

6. (Identify Level) Identify career goals, develop a portfolio and perform a job search in the construction industry.

7. (Synthesis Level) Develop professional skills relevant to the construction industry, including communication, critical thinking, and teamwork.

8. (Synthesis Level) Using computer applications and the Internet create and manage a construction related project.
Standards for Program
Successful completion of course work will lead to a CAC Certificate in Basic Construction Technology. In addition, National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) credentials may be earned in BCT classes by scoring a minimum of 70% on NCCER written and performance exams.
