Paramedicine Certificate
Semester Hours:  50.5
Effective Term: Fall 2015
Prerequisites: (EMS100 or current CPR certification), EMS125 (ADHS EMT Certified for 1 yr) and FSC129.
Corequisites: None


Program Description: Students will be prepared to work as paramedics and have the knowledge to critically think and act to take care of patients. They will have the knowledge and skills required for emergency care, stabilization and immobilization of victims of illness and injury.

Recommended Proficiencies: Students must meet eligibility requirements established by the Arizona Department of Health Services, Bureau of EMS.

Paramedicine Certificate (50.5 Credits)

Core courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or above.

Other Requirements
Students must earn a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Students must earn at least one-third of the Certificate credits from CAC.
Program Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Knowledge Level) Identify the roles and responsibilities of the advanced emergency medical technician (paramedic).
2. (Comprehensive Level) Understand and summarize the actions, indications, contraindications, precautions, side effects and dosages of the drugs included in the current Arizona Department of Health Services approved paramedic drug box.
3. (Analysis Level) Administer parenteral medications based on an analysis of patient needs and patient's current prescribed and OTC medications.
4. (Application Level) Identify, treat and record infiltration and discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines. Demonstrate compentency of discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines.
5. (Application Level) Obtain and record blood samples on any patient requiring the procedure. Demonstrate compentency of this procedure.
6. (Evaluation Level) Describe the paramedic's role in a patient care situation as defined by the US Department of Transportation and conduct self- and peer-critiques.
7. (Comprehensive Level) Identify and summarize the components of the Well-Being of a Paramedic as defined by the US Department of Transportation.
8. (Comprehensive Level) Describe and discuss the objectives listed under injury prevention for the patient and the caregiver.
9. (Analysis Level) Describe and analyze the components of medico-legal issues involving the paramedic and the Standard of Care.
10. (Evaluation Level) Define, evaluate and describe ethics related to patient care.
11. (Application Level) Describe and relate the importance of human systems to include anatomy and physiology as it relates to paramedicine.
12. (Comprehensive Level) Describe the general principles of pathophysiology.
13. (Analysis Level) Outline and discuss the objectives in therapeutic communications with patients.
14. (Synthesis Level) Based on the mechanics of respiration and the elements of airway management and ventilation, successfully intubate and demonstrate compentency on all classes of humans, and perform successful ventilation, both advanced and basic forms.
15. (Evaluation Level) Define, analyze, treat and evaluate treatment of all types of respiratory compromise based on effective treatment modalities authorized by DHS and National Registry of EMTs-Basic and Paramedic.
Standards for Program
1. This program is seeking accreditation by COAEMSP.
2. Student must meet current AHA ACLS standards for Airway Management.
3. Student must successfully pass all module exams at 75% or greater (allowances made under ARS rules from AzDHS BEMS).
4. Student must meet current National Registry of EMTs Advanced guidelines for practicals.
5. Student must attend and successfully complete all phases of required internship, both field and clinical settings.
6. Student must maintain at least a 75% or greater in the classroom setting as outlined by the ALS Student Contract For Success.
7. Student must maintain at least a satisfactory report from peers, instructor, preceptors and clinical advisors.
