Description: Advanced skills in shoeing horses to eliminate and/or correct lameness to the extent that the animal remains useful and pain free.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. Apply bar shoes.
2. Apply foam blocks.
3. Diagnose various causes of lameness.
4. Recognize fungus as it affects the hoof.
5. Identify thrush and white line disease.
6. Stipulate the appropriate proective pad for each lameness diagnosed.
Internal/External Standards Accreditation
1. Select and apply the proper bar shoe for each lameness by correctly applying shoe to horse to achieve remediation of problem without creating additional pain or distress.
2. Apply foam blocks for therapy correctly 75% of the time for the purpose of assisting the foundered or abused horse.
3. Recognize the type of lameness and the cause of lameness by examination (visually and with tools) with 75% accuracy rate.
4. Diagnose the deterioration of the hoof due to a fungal infection with 75% accuracy.
5. Recognize thrush and white line disease by examination (visually and with tools) the hoof capsule.
6. Select, prepare and apply the wedge appliance with proper angle to achieve optimum hoof angle with 75% accuracy.
