Description: Theories of normality and abnormality, models of psychopathology, classification and treatment of mental disorder, and principles of various forms of psychotherapy.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. Identify the scientific basis for classifying and treating mental illness.

2. Demonstrate an understanding of the development of the psychology of abnormality historically, empirically, and ethically.

3. Analyze and apply the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (DSM IV) system of classification of mental illness.

4. Evaluate and apply the basic paradigms currently used for approaching the study of mental health.

5. Identify and critique the resources available for improving mental health today.

6. Discuss the issues currently underlying classification and treatment of mental illness.
Internal/External Standards Accreditation
1. Develop or create a capstone project using the knowledge obtained in class wherein the student creates a fictional mental disorder including symptoms, diagnoses and treatment.

2. Using a variety of forms of case studies, accurately identify ethical, diagnoses and treatment issues basic to abnormal psychology.
