Description: An introduction to the basic knowledge and practical experience necessary for the safe and successful collection of blood specimens. Students have the opportunity for practical experience in a hospital or doctor office setting.

Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED; Immunizations required; and RDG094

Corequisites: HKS255

Recommendations: To complete all required Lectures and Labs

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Comprehension Level) Describe the anatomy and physiology related to the various venipuncture sites.
2. (Comprehension Level) Identify the veins of the arms, hands, legs and feet on which phlebotomy is performed. Explain the functions of the major constituents of blood, and differentiate between whole blood, serum and plasma.
3. (Comprehension Level) Identify the various types of additives used in blood collection, and explain the reasons for their use. Demonstrate knowledge of collection equipment and special precautions necessary and substances that interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents.
4. (Knowledge Level) Describe the various types of blood specimens and how each is obtained.
5. (Application Level) Demonstrate the various methods of venipuncture including vacuum tube, butterfly and syringe.
6. (Analysis Level) Identify possible problems during a venipuncture and explain how to solve these problems.
7. (Application Level) Demonstrate completing requisitions, specimen transport and processing.
Internal/External Standards Accreditation
1. Label diagrams of anatomy and physiology of the various venipuncture sites with 100% accuracy; indicate and describe on a live patient the anatomy and physiology of the various venipuncture sites with 100% accuracy in a minimum of five out of five attempts.
2. Demonstrate correct procedures for safe and painless blood specimen collection including patient prep, application of tourniquet, use of evacuated tubes and order of draw for multiple tubes with 100% accuracy in a minimum of five out of five attempts.
3. Process a minimum of 10 blood samples following OSHA rules with 100% accuracy.
4. Use the OSHA Standard Precautions. Use the appropriate practices, as outlined in the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, including the correct use of the Material Safety Data Sheet as directed.
