Description: Advanced projects in painting with emphasis on composition and personal stylistic development. May be taken 4 times for credit. Prerequisite: ART202.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Synthesis Level) Using simplified value shapes, create a sketch illustrating identifiable principles of design, and then explain composition choices in a class discussion.
2. (Synthesis Level) Transfer the original sketch for a painting to a painting support using tracing, projection, grids or pouncing before completing the painting.
3. (Analysis Level) Organize and execute a composition for a painting using a dominant value key (dark, middle,or light).
4. (Synthesis Level) Compose an original painting using independent research strategies to determine subject matter and expressive qualities.
5. (Synthesis Level) Research and report, in either verbal or written format, on a historical painter or style and incorporate a subject, technique or palette from that painter or style into an original painting.
6. (Synthesis Level) Complete one or more thoughtfully designed paintings showing advanced technical skill through size or complexity.
7. (Evaluation Level) Critique and compare paintings in a class discussion according to a given rubric.
