Description: Exploration of color, composition, techniques and subject matter in painting media.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Application Level) Employ the indirect painting method by preparing a tonal under painting and building color using a series of transparent glazes to represent an observed object.
2. (Application Level) Use direct painting (a la prima) methods to depict still life, figure or landscape.
3. (Analysis Level) Organize a composition and execute a painting using a dominant key (light, medium or dark) in the painting.
4. (Synthesis Level) Illustrate observed textures including transparent or reflective surfaces using representational, simulated texture in a painting.
5. (Application Level) Experiment with the use of actual texture in a painting.
6. (Synthesis Level) Using the rules of composition and principles of design, execute a non-representational painting.
7. (Evaluation Level) Critique and compare concepts and techniques of paintings in a class discussion according to a given rubric.
8. (Synthesis Level) Use independent research strategies to prepare sketches and studies prior to completing a minimum of four paintings.
