Description: Introduction to conversational Portuguese. Fundamentals of authentic speaking and listening skills in Portuguese, with minimal grammar instruction. Introduction to cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. Speaking:
a. (Application Level) Utilize frequently used expressions and learned vocabulary to describe objects, people and places.
b. (Application Level) Formulate questions to satisfy basic needs (real-life situations).
c. (Application Level) Express basic needs (real-life experiences).
d. (Application Level) Use formulaic and other courtesy expressions.
e. (Application Level) Respond to the formulaic and courtesy expressions.
f. (Synthesis Level) Participate in very simple face to face conversations with limited spontaneity using frequently used expressions and learned vocabulary.
g. (Application Level) Use correct Portuguese pronunciation.
h. (Synthesis Level) Produce grammatically correct, basic level sentences.

2. Listening
a. (Comprehension Level) When a speaker uses slow, deliberate speech and careful articulation, the student will aurally comprehend the following: short narratives, biographical information, phone messages, and short factual descriptions of objects, places, and/or people.
b. (Comprehension Level) Aurally comprehend formulaic expressions, questions and courtesy expressions from a Portuguese speaker.

3. Culture:
a. (Analysis Level) Begin to distinguish between the Portuguese speaking world's and other speaking world's customs and life styles.
