Description: Recreational hiking in the desert and mountains using basic knowledge and skills to achieve physical enhancement and mental stimulation at a low strenuous level. May be taken four times for credit.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. Explain the elements of basic hiking.
2. Employ the suggested navigation and map reading skills.
3. Demonstrate the benefits of recreational hiking and improve physical stamina.
4. Apply and understand proper safety and basic survival practices necessary for hiking on trails in the desert and mountains.
5. Identify environmental issues and practice back country and leave-no-trace ethics.
Internal/External Standards Accreditation
- Hike at least 3 miles of a 3-5 mile hike five times per semester on desert and mountain trails.
- Employ Arizona trail etiquette rules on all hikes.
