Description: Principles and practice of public speaking, with special attention given to the selection, organization, and presentation of material based upon audience analysis as well as acquisition of confidence and speaking poise. Prerequisites: ENG101, RDG094.

COM 206
1. (Application Level) Describe and demonstrate how the individual elements of the communication process including encoding, decoding, message, noise, context, and channels contribute to a transactional exchange.
2. (Application Level) Explain the importance of selecting and narrowing a topic to the success of a presentation and demonstrate the ability to appropriately frame a topic.
3. (Application Level) Describe how audience perceptions and situational expectations affect the reception of the speaker's presentation. Demonstrate the ability to adapt appropriately to the audience and situation.
4. (Application Level) Use appropriate research methods necessary for finding a variety of forms of support which add power and credibility to a speech.
5. (Application Level) Construct appropriate introductions and conclusions.
6. (Application Level) Explain the impact of verbal and nonverbal messages in a presentation and demonstrate the ability to use them effectively and appropriately.
7. (Application Level) Create appropriate visual aids using presentational software.

Internal/External Standards Accreditation
Division Required Standards:

Students must deliver presentations in-person to an audience of at least 8 people. Required cumulative total of presentations must be a minimum of 20 minutes.
1.Minimum number of presentations is four.
2.Of the four presentations, at least one must be informative and at least one must be persuasive.
3.Of the four presentations, at least three must require the following:
- -An outlined preparation
- -Integration of researched information
- -Appropriate use of visual aids.
