Description: English language listening, speaking, reading and writing skill development, levels of Beginning Literacy - ELAA V. Learners are assessed upon entry to determine English skill levels and placed in the appropriate learning level. The course content varies according to skills that align to the six levels and standards of the Arizona Department of Education Adult Education Standards for English Language Acquisition for Adults (ELAA). Learners progress at their own pace and may repeat the course to continue in the next level as they progress toward completion of all six ELAA levels. Students may continue taking ESL/ELAA courses as long as they demonstrate an appropriate level of improvement, based on assessment scores. If a student does not improve and maintain that level of improvement after six sessions, he/she will not be permitted to continue to register for ESL/ELAA classes. Prerequisite: Pretest to determine existing skill level.

Recommendations: Consolidation of courses will reflect actual class sizes, as advised by CAC administration.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to do the following at one of the six levels:

1. (Application Level) Apply the writing process and conventions of English grammar and usage rules to a variety of writing tasks.
2. (Comprehension Level) In English, orally summarize and/or interpret a variety of written texts.
3. (Comprehension Level) Demonstrate understanding of English by following written and oral instructions of varying complexity.
4. (Comprehension Level) Express personal information with varying degrees of detail.
5. (Application Level) Read and interpret a variety of functional and informational texts.
6. (Analysis Level) Interpret social discourse in multiple contexts.
Internal/External Standards Accreditation
