Description: Music history and literature with emphasis on listening to and evaluating all types of music, noting the influence of the major composers and the media through which music is produced. Attendance at live musical events in a variety of venues will be encouraged.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Knowledge Level) Describe the properties of sound and elements of music and relate their importance to music in all styles in oral or written discourse.
2. (Knowledge Level) Aurally recognize voices and instruments commonly found in choral music and symphony orchestras.
3. (Comprehension Level) In written discourse, summarize significant historical developments with shifts in musical styles.
4. (Analysis Level) In written or oral discourse, examine the main characteristics of music distinctive to each historical period from ancient Greece and Rome to the present.
5. (Analysis Level) Aurally extrapolate from selected musical examples from each historical period: title, composer, melody, harmony, rhythmic characteristics, as well as, genre and formal organization.
6. (Comprehension Level) Research and report musical events of varying genres currently happening in Arizona, the United States, and the world.
