Description: This emergency medical technician practicum provides hands-on application of EMS skills and knowledge in a supervised, pre-hospital emergency setting, with an emphasis on demonstrating diagnostic and advanced emergency treatment skills to care for acutely ill and seriously injured patients. Students further develop diagnostic and advanced emergency treatment skills, professional communications with patients, their families, hospital and fire personnel, and improve speed and accuracy of delivery of lifesaving patient analysis and intervention care procedures.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Analysis Level) Analyze the roles and responsibilities of the advanced emergency medical technician (paramedic) in relation to hospital personnel and fire science personnel.
2. (Analysis Level) Following analysis, develop a treatment plan under the direction of professionals in the field, including determining the actions, indications, contraindications, precautions, side effects and dosages of various drugs.
3. (Analysis Level) Administer parenteral medications, analyze results and side effects, and identify various treatment plans.
4. (Analysis Level) Identify, treat and record infiltration and discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines and identify various ways to improve.
5. (Analysis Level) Obtain, record, and analyze blood samples from patients.
6. (Analysis Level) Based on practicum experiences and case studies, identify and discuss the paramedic's role in a patient care situation per the US Department of Transportation's guidelines.
7. (Analysis Level) Create a self-care plan to achieve a high level of competency, alertness, and a balanced lifestyle.
8. (Evaluation Level) Collaborate with the patient and caregiver to establish injury prevention goals and strategies.
9. (Evaluation Level) Distinguish and interpret the components of medico-legal issues involving the paramedic and the Standard of Care.
10. (Evaluation Level) Justify a patient care action based on an informed, research-based decision, including common ethical dilemmas faced by paramedics.
11. (Analysis Level) Diagnose a patient by analyzing the human system.
12. (Analysis Level) Analyze the general principles of pathophysiology based on case studies.
13. (Synthesis Level) Create and implement an effective therapeutic communication plan with a variety of patients.
14. (Evaluation Level) Assess, define and discuss the mechanics of respiration and determine necessary and appropriate care for a variety of patients.
15. (Evaluation Level) Demonstrate and critique the elements of airway management and ventilation in all classes of humans.
16. (Analysis Level) Intubate all classes of humans, including advanced ventilation techniques.
17. (Synthesis Level) Effectively treat patients with all types of compromised respiratory systems as recommended by the Department of Health Services (DHS) and the National Registry of EMTs-Basic and Paramedic.
18. (Synthesis Level) Consistently demonstrate safe, effective, responsible, collaborative, professional behaviors.
Internal/External Standards Accreditation
1. Current AHA, NRC, AHSI or other ACLS standards for Airway Management, patient assessment and treatment modalities.
2. Successfully pass all module exams @ 75% or greater (allowances made under ARS rules from AzDHS BEMS).
3. Current National Registry of EMTs Basic and Advanced guidelines for practicals to be administered at the end of the course.
4. Attend and successfully complete all phases of required field and clinical experience.
5. Maintain at least a 75% or greater in the classroom setting as outlined by the ALS Student Contract For Success.
6. Maintain at least a satisfactory report from peers, instructor, preceptors and clinical advisors.
7. Meet requirements outlined by Arizona Dept. Of Health Services, Bureau of EMS, rule R9-25-308.
8. Meet requirements set forth by US Dept. Of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, EMT-Paramedic: National Standard Curriculum.
9. Meet current requirements for successful completion of National Registry of EMT-Paramedic practical and written exams.
