Description: A continuation of CHI101 emphasizing modern spoken and written Mandarin Chinese for non-native speakers. Continued development of proper pronunciation, grammar, conversation and reading and writing skills. Survey of cultural norms, beliefs and traditions from areas where Mandarin Chinese is spoken. Prerequisite: CHI101.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
Per Language ATF, with an audience that is highly sympathetic and/or moderately sympathetic, given the level of the task:
1. (Comprehension Level) Reading Mandarin Chinese: Demonstrate comprehension of the gist and some details of written:
1a. descriptions containing factual information.
1b. information expressing feelings and opinions.
1c. narrations of a series of events
1d. recognize approximately 260 additional Chinese characters in both simplified and traditional forms.
1e. demonstrate comprehension of everyday materials such as menus, advertisement, travel brochures and itineraries.
1f. Derive meaning from the written target language from texts that are structurally simple.
Writing Mandarin Chinese:
1g. Recombine learned vocabulary into structurally simple written statements and questions.

2. (Application Level) Writing Mandarin Chinese: using a limited amount of creativity, improvisation, and elaboration:
2a. describe objects, places, people, and events.
2b. express feelings and opinions.
2c. combine ideas into strings of sentences.
2d. give instructions.
2e. using an appropriate amount of creativity, improvisation, and elaboration, write approximately 250 additional Chinese characters in either traditional or simplified form.

3. (Application Level) Speaking Mandarin Chinese: using a limited creativity, improvisation, and elaboration:
3a. describe objects, places, people, and events.
3b. express feelings and opinions.
3c. initiate, response, and contribute to simple face-to-face conversations on everyday topics.
3d. give instructions.
3e. Speaking Mandarin Chinese, recombine learned vocabulary and frequently used expressions into meaningful statements.
3f. Express basic needs and use basic courtesy expressions.

4. (Analysis Level) In Listening to Mandarin Chinese: from a speaker who uses measured and deliberate speech and somewhat careful articulation, aurally comprehend the gist and a few details of:
4a. descriptions of objects, places, people, and events on topics concerning factual information.
4b. information expressing feelings and opinions.
4c. simple instructions or commands.
4d. Listening to Mandarin Chinese, demonstrate comprehension of high frequency vocabulary in structurally simple sentences and questions in a limited number of content areas.

5. (Synthesis Level) CULTURE:
5a. Recognize and describe simple culture norms, beliefs, and regional variations within areas where the Mandarin Chinese language is spoken/used.
5b. Recognize and describe key social and cultural traditions.
