Description: An application of basic phlebotomy training to provide safe and successful collection of blood specimens. Students have the opportunity for practical experience in an outpatient blood collection site or hospital setting.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Application Level) Demonstrate procedures for infection control and safety.
2. (Application Level) Demonstrate proper use of safety equipment and implications that may affect performance.
3. (Application Level) Demonstrates venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
4. (Comprehension Level) Explain puncture techniques.
5. (Comprehension Level) Describe requisitioning, specimen transport and processing.
6. (Application Level) Demonstrate quality assurance practices in phlebotomy.
Internal/External Standards Accreditation
1. Student must meet all outcomes at the level of 100% accuracy on an OSHA universal precaution exam.
2. Student must verify successful obtainment by lab assistant signing logbook of attempts in order to complete 100 successful venipunctures using vacutainer/syringe; 10 successful capillary sticks using glucometer.
3. Student must verify observation of arterial puncture by obtaining signature of RT.
