Description: Reading comprehension and vocabulary skills for ELL students, by emphasizing the relationship between words and ideas, word parts, word history, context clues of Standard American English, and how they contribute in determining the topic, main idea, and details of a reading selection. Students may take RDG091 or RDG091A for credit.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Analysis level) Analyze Standard American English word structures to determine word families and their root meaning.
2. (Analysis level) Analyze Standard American English sentence structure, syntax and context clues to determine the meaning of new vocabulary.
3. (Comprehension level) Identify the eight parts of speech and standard English word order.
4. (Comprehension level) Recognize common English idioms and distinguish between the literal and figurative meanings.
5. (Application level) Demonstrate an understanding of analogies.
6. (Comprehension level) Differentiate between topics, main ideas, and supporting details.
7. (Comprehension level) Summarize multi paragraph readings without the use of translation.
8. (Application level) Demonstrate how to use the dictionary, library and resource materials to enhance vocabulary acquisition.
9. (Application level) Demonstrate correct Standard American English pronunciation and intonation as well as an understanding of the texts meaning when reading aloud.

1a. Create word families around Standard American English cognates.
1b. Identify word roots, prefixes, and suffixes and map changes of meaning when affixes are applied.
2. Use sentence context and word part definitions to determine meanings of unfamiliar words in sentences. Predict the definition of unfamiliar words by using context clues.

4. Identify similes, metaphors, and personification in readings; use the elements of figurative language in paragraph writing.
