Description: An introduction to the basic techniques of transparent watercolor with application of design and drawing principles in composition. May be taken four times for credit. Prerequisite: ART107. Recommended: ART101.

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. (Knowledge/Application Level) Identify and illustrate unique properties of watercolor pigments, tools and techniques.
2. (Analysis Level) Experiment with the properties of value, saturation and hue of a variety of aquarelle pigments.
3. (Application Level) Interpret subject matter using representational as well as expressive color.
4. (Application Level) Implement principles of linear and aerial perspective to produce spatial illusion in two dimensional paintings.
5. (Application Level) Experiment with the use of a variety of simulated textures.
6. (Evaluation Level) Critique projects in a class discussion using a given rubric.
7. (Synthesis Level) Prepare a portfolio of watercolor compositions.
Internal/External Standards Accreditation
1. Complete basic painting exercises illustrating washes, stains, glazes and other application techniques.
2. Paint a value scale and a value study from an observed subject.
3. Apply basic color mixing knowledge to complete a saturation and temperature study.
4. Using primary colors mix the appropriate colors to paint a representational still life which implements principles of linear and aerial perspective to produce spatial illusion.
5. Compose a painting using a predetermined limited palette such as analogous or complementary colors complete.
6. Experiment with representational and/or decorative texture in a planned composition.
7. Participate in a class critique using a given rubric.
8. Submit a portfolio of 3 or more finished paintings.
