Description: Introduction to the foundations of law and ethics in health care, legal issues for health care practitioners, and professional, social, and interpersonal health care issues.

1. Summarize and describe accurately the foundations of healthcare law and ethics including credentials, professional codes of ethics, the various laws, the courts and contracts.
2. Analyze accurately the legal issues for working healthcare practitioners including professional liability and medical malpractice, defenses to liability suits, medical records and informed consent, and privacy laws and HIPAA regulations.
3. Outline correctly the professional liability and medical malpractice issues for health care practitioners including concept of reasonable- person standard, standard of care and duty of care, privacy, confidentiality, privileged communication, and the four elements necessary to prove negligence.
4. Analyze correctly the professional, social and interpersonal health care issues for healthcare practitioners including physicians' public duties and responsibilities, workplace legalities, beginning of life and childhood, death and dying, and ethics for healthcare practitioners.
5. Analyze accurately the ethical business issues for healthcare practitioners including advertising and the media, fees and charges, guidelines for medical records and a physician's practice, and professional rights and responsibilities.
