Description: The basics of carpentry, including safety, tools, code, and hands-on skills.

Prerequisites: None

Corequisites: MAT 082 or equivalent score on math placement test

Recommendations: None

Measurable Student Learning Outcomes
1. Explain and apply safety rules and procedures relating to the construction site.

2. Measure and mark materials for cutting.

3. Use hand and power tools to shape and cut materials.

4. Demonstrate the ability to use appropriate tools and fasteners to assemble materials.

5. Use builder's leveling tools to measure and lay out angles.

6. Identify types and grades of lumber and types of lumber defects.

7. Apply principles related to thermal and acoustic properties of construction materials.

8. Identify uses, advantages, and disadvantages of metal materials.

9. Outline material moisture problems and methods of managing those problems.

10. Compare site conditions to code requirements.
