Description: The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Construction Trades - Mechanical Trades: Plumbing degree is designed to provide apprentices and journeymen with a broadened educational background and leadership skills so that students completing the associate degree program may be better equipped to enter supervisory and managerial positions.

Program Competencies
1. Apply knowledge of business-personal computers to the business setting. (BPC/CIS+++++)
2. Meet the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) for workplace safety including first aid, CPR and personal safety. (MEC105, MEC107, OSH105)
3. Perform basic and advanced calculations related to the trade. (MEC105, MEC107, MEC207)
4. Identify use and care of hand tools, place and install various types of pipe and piping systems, hangers, supports, thermal expansion and insulation including installation of pipe sleeves and floor penetrations. (MEC105, ABC/MEC121)
5. Discuss the principals of science as they relate to pipe/valve system installation/ maintenance and identify specific in-line specialty equipment for pipefitting including purpose and function. (MEC105)
6. Prepare, read and interpret blueprints, drawings, detail sheets and field sketches including parts and types of drawings, materials, specifications and special treatments. (MEC107, MEC108, MEC207, MEC208, MEC218)
7. Discuss general considerations, leaks, drainage, installation, repair, maintenance, gas piping/code requirements, basic electricity and troubleshooting, and service for residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional systems. (MEC108, MEC118, MEC205, MEC207, MEC208)
8. Discuss hydraulic and plumbing theory related to pumps. (MEC218)
9. Discuss procedures for planning daily work activities including coordinating with other crafts, establishing safe working conditions and field checking including non-destructive (NDE) examination of materials. (MEC258)
