Description: Consideration of historic factors influencing fashion and fashion change with special emphasis on historic costume



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Explain how costume originated. (I)
2. Identify examples of Egyptian, Cretian, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman dress. (I)
3. Select adaptations from pictures of Egyptian, Cretian, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman dress. (I)
4. Select examples of costumes from the Dark Ages, the Byzantine Empire, and Medieval periods. (I)
5. Identify Renaissance styles and explain how they have been adapted to present day dress. (I, II)
6. Define terminology for each historic period. (I-IV)
7. List items of apparel, fibers and fabrics, colors, hair styles, headdresses, and accessories unique to each period of historic costume. (I-IV)
8. Describe fashion trends and changes in fashion. (I-IV)
9. Date costumes according to the historical time period. (I-IV)
10. Identify the origin of styles. (I-IV)
11. Describe silhouette and hemline cycles as they reappear historically. (I-IV)
12. Identify color themes and fabric patterns used currently which have historic origins. (I-IV)
13. Explain how the Industrial Revolution affected dress and identify examples of dress from this time period. (III)
14. Select examples of costume for each of the stages of the modern age of change. (IV)
