Description: Literature of Ireland from 1880 to the present. Examines how uniquely Irish themes have been reflected in high and popular culture and how these cultures and themes have influenced Ireland`s literary tradition

1. Identify significant Irish writers and genres of the modern period. (I-VII)
2. Identify the role of the writer in Irish politics, society, history, and culture. (I-VII)
3. Identify primary themes, ideas, attitudes, and their expressions in representative Irish works. (I-VII)
4. Identify elements and major events in the cultural and historical milieu in which representative works of Irish literature were produced. (I-VII)
5. Describe the relationship of Irish literary genres to social, cultural, and political movements. (I-VII)
6. Describe how an author`s gender and/or cultural/religious background can influence the development of his or her work. (II-VII)
7. Identify the most common elements of Irish poetry, fiction, and drama. (I-VII)
8. Describe the writing techniques, styles, and devices characteristically used by Irish writers. (I-VII)
9. Interpret a poem, a short story or novel, and a play through oral and/or written discourse, using literary criticism and Modern Language Association style documentation as a basis. (VIII)
