Description: Design aspects of traditional early childhood play materials examined for teaching/learning potential. Includes design, production, and field-testing of teacher-made devices



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Identify and describe the contributions of Maria Montessori to the design of educational play materials. (I)
2. Explain the distinction between sensory and symbolic play, and describe its developmental significance as suggested by Piaget. (II)
3. Describe and explain the relationship of play to learning at the early childhood level of development. (II)
4. Explain how traditional play materials further development in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains of learning. (III)
5. Describe safety and durability features which must be considered when purchasing early childhood materials.(IV)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies.
