Catalog Course Description: A general introduction to music and the elements influencing musical composition and expression: personal, societal, ethnic, and historic. The development of listening techniques and analysis of selected works are emphasized in a survey of musical literature.  
Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Survey major historical and contemporary styles and genres of music through reading, listening, writing and discussion. (1,3,4,5)
2. Determine the historical and modern functions of music in society. (3,5,6)
3. Utilize the elements of music and appropriate terminology specific to the study of music as an art. (1,2,4)
4. Apply critical listening skills to examples of musical literature and formulate perceptions. (1,3,5)
5. Create projects about topics appropriate to the study of music. (1,4,5)  
Course Competencies: Competency 1:Analyze various historical and contemporary musical selections by style and genre.
Objective 1.1 Identify stylistic elements of the major Western composition styles in music during the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods.
Objective 1.2 Analyze selected major works and their composers.
Objective 1.3 Determine characteristics of selected choral genres and forms such as oratorio, opera (aria, recitative), cantata, mass, organum, chanson, madrigal, motet, and art song.
Objective 1.4 Match the characteristics of selected instrumental genres to each form such as symphony, suite, concerto, sonata, chamber music, overture, sinfonia, and concertino.
Objective 1.5 Compare and contrast the use of compositional elements in Western and non-Western musical works.

Competency 2 Evaluate the general functions of music in historic and modern societies.
Objective 2.1 Examine the personal, societal,ethical, racial, gender-based and global factors that influence the composition and performance of music.
Objective 2.2 Use examples of sacred and secular music to explain how each functions in society.
Objective 2.3 Summarize how the origins and characteristics of selected music influences society.
