ATF Meeting Report Form
Mohave Community College
Philosophy

Originator: Wyre, Steve           Status: Approved           Department: PHI Philosophy
Date Created: 10/13/2015         Submitted: 10/13/2015         Completed: 10/15/2015
ATF (Program or Discipline): Philosophy
Date of the ATF: 10/9/15
Statewide Update: We spend the first two hours discussing the HLC requirement for 18 graduate hours in philosophy to teach philosophy and that, apparently, a number of the smaller and more remote campuses have had people teaching who will no longer be qualified once the rule is in place, 9/1/17. Some campuses have moved that date up to 1/1/16 and that has caused some angst. A committee was formed to discover the true scope of the problem and someone will be getting with the Board of Regents to see if there might be a way to accommodate the affected in a way that can get them the hours they need to keep teaching.

Beyond this, the second two hours were spend on smaller matters, nothing that will impact the future for Mohave. There was much hand wringing over the decrease in numbers of philosophy courses offered and the future of the Humanities in general. No real suggestions made. Some were amazed at the number of campuses offering most or all PHI classes in the online modality.

University Curricular updates: Campuses participating were Cochise, Pima, Mesa, Coconino, Northland, Glendale, Tavapai, AWC, Central, and Mohave. I believe there were a few others not listed, being on the phone and no video, it was hard to tell who promoted what. I was awaiting the minutes, but they have not arrived as of the time/date of this report.
Community college Curricular Updates: In terms of curriculum, it was discussed that a number of other schools, for profit and trade schools, are pushing critical thinking and that might not be a bad thing to do, to have more options for logic and critical thinking classes. These can be tied to STEM promotions, but that was about it.
Suggested changes to matricies: There were not absolute changes proposed or any dates discussed other than the next meeting.

The HLC rules go into effect 9/1/17, but some campuses are pushing that date up.
Articulation:
Volunteering: None, but if there were a chance to offer logic, it might be good.
Certificates: None
Degrees: None
Other:
Additional Comments: While it was an interesting meeting, the bulk of the time was spent discussing HLC changes and trying to brainstorm ways to keep good faculty in compliance and hoping for more promotion of the Humanities, Philosophy specifically.
Writing Across the Curriculum: None at all.
