Catalog Course Description: | A study of the elements and principles of design applied to 3-Dimensional work. Develop perception, imagination and expression of 3-dimensional form. |
Course Learning Outcomes: | 1. Apply 3-dimensional design elements, principles, and vocabulary to artistic compositions. (1, 2, 3)
2. Demonstrate a variety of approaches to developing 3-dimensional design concepts. (1, 2, 3, 4) 3. Use a variety of construction methods to create 3-dimensional forms. (1, 2, 3, 4, 6) 4. Demonstrate aesthetic awareness and critique skills for 3-dimensional art. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) |
Course Competencies: | Competency 1 Develop a working knowledge of the fundamentals of 3-dimensional elements and principles of design while creating exercises and assignments
Objective 1.1 Evaluate and describe the use of the elements of 3-dimensional design (line, shape, value, texture, color, plane, mass/volume and space) while looking at a variety of 3-dimensional forms. Objective 1.2 Apply the principles of 3-dimensional design (unity, contrast, variety, rhythm, repetition, emphasis, movement, balance, proportion) to a variety of assignments Competency 2 Demonstrate a variety of approaches to developing 3-dimensional concepts such as the direct approach, thumbnail sketches, and scale models. Objective 2.1 Use a direct approach using an immediate response to the materials. Objective 2.2 Draw 2-dimensional thumbnail sketches to visualize their ideas from multiple views. Objective 2.3 Make a scale model or machete to visualize the subject in three dimensions. Competency 3 Produce projects exploring a variety of construction methods for 3-dimensional art Objective 3.1 Assemble materials to fabricate a form through additive processes such as welding, gluing, or connections made with nuts and bolts, rivets or other fasteners. Objective 3.2 Make subtractive sculpture by carving away materials. Objective 3.3 Create sculpture using substitution techniques by making molds and casting cold or molten materials. Objective 3.4 Make a form through manipulation processes such as clay. Competency 4 Explore surface treatments and textures for finishing 3-dimensional art. Objective 4.1 Create forms that use the natural surface of the material as a finished surface Objective 4.2 Create forms that utilize worked or manipulated treatments as a finished surface Objective 4.3 Create forms with a simulated surface that hides the original materials Competency 5 Use design terms and vocabulary accurately while engaged in class discussions and activities. Objective 5.1 Evaluate the expressive qualities of various materials and techniques Objective 5.2 Evaluate the effective use of 3-dimensional design principles to communicate intended content of a proposed form. Objective 5.3 Display completed projects as a portfolio or body of work. |
