Students will develop a working knowledge of medical words, terms and abbreviations that relate to body systems, anatomical structures, medical processes and procedures and disease conditions. Emphasis is placed on application, spelling, definition, usage and pronunciation. |

Course Competencies and Objectives OR Course Competencies and Outline: | Competency 1 Identify the medical word elements
Objective 1.1 Use word elements to form medical terms Objective 1.2 Analyze the importance of correctly spelling and pronouncing medical terms. Objective 1.3 Differentiate the elements of word root, combining form, suffix and prefix and how they relate. Objective 1.4 Show the process for dividing medical terms into their basic elements. Objective 1.5 Evaluate how the use of suffixes and prefixes are used to modify the word root in a medical term. Objective 1.6 Utilizing correct medical pronunciation guidelines demonstrate how to pronounce medical terms correctly. Objective 1.7 Convert terms from singular to plural and plural to singular. Competency 2 Examine the several levels of structure and function of the human body Objective 2.1 Determine how each level is inter-related Objective 2.2 Distinguish the basic structural units of the body including the cellular, the tissue, the organ, the system and the organism levels. Objective 2.3 Evaluate the importance of using the anatomic position as a reference point when describing the location of specific body structures. Objective 2.4 Compare the two major body cavities and the types of organs present in each. Objective 2.5 Analyze the three major body planes and how they are used to describe body direction such as in radiographic images. Objective 2.6 Assess the use of quadrants and regions in describing the abdominopelvic cavity.
