Catalog Course Description: A survey of children's literature focused on grades pre-k-8. This course includes the study of a variety of popular children's authors, illustrators, and genres and is designed to enhance students' appreciation and analysis of literature with a focus on how to effectively choose and implement children's literature in educational contexts. This course requires additional and outside reading of a variety of children's literature titles.

Objective 1.1: Define the key literary elements of children's literature including plot, characters, setting, and theme
Objective 1.2: Distinguish elements of fiction and non-fiction.
Objective 1.3: Identify the importance of theme and how multiple elements of a story work together to contribute to its meaning.
Objective 1.4: Research the various awards given to authors, illustrators, and texts and what standards in quality these awards represent
Competency 2: Evaluate children's literature for the purpose of selecting and integrating quality works across the curriculum
Objective 2.1: Analyze and select high quality and developmentally appropriate literature for children in a range of genres and age levels from preschool to 8th grade.
Objective 2.2: Identify quality contributing authors and illustrators of children's literature.
Objective 2.3: Recognize the importance of illustrations in children's literature.
Objective 2.4: Utilize quality literature as a means for encouraging children to read and respond in ways that enhance their academic and social-emotional skills
Competency 3: Demonstrate knowledge of suggested methods for teaching and learning through children's literature
Objective 3.1: Design and present age-appropriate activities designed to stimulate and extend children's literary experiences and reading enjoyment.
Objective 3.2: Analyze the factors that influence the responses of children to literature.
Objective 3.3: Develop lesson plans that integrate literature throughout the curriculum.
Competency 4: Promote diversity through implementing quality children's literature in the curriculum
Objective 4.1: Examine critically how children's literature reflects and promotes society's views of childhood, gender roles, etc., from early books to current publishing trends.
Objective 4.2: Encourage reading as a means of introducing children to the diversity in the world and the classroom.
Objective 4.3: Survey books and assess goals for creating a climate of understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures and ethnic heritages.
Competency 5: Differentiate between the multiple genres of children's literature and their purpose in teaching and learning

Objective 5.2: Examine how specific genres help illustrate meaning in historical and modern contexts
Objective 5.3: Identify the different characteristics of the main genres and sub genres of children's literature including, fantasy, early childhood books, traditional literature, contemporary fiction, non fiction/informational texts, and poetry
