Catalog Course Description: | Reviews American Sign Language vocabulary, language functions and grammatical structures presented in ASL 101 and ASL 102. Focuses on grammatical and vocabulary expansion with emphasis on idiomatic usage and socio-cultural communicative functions. Continues development of communicative competence in ASL to enable students to express opinions, detail descriptions, participate in lengthier discourse, and sign narratives. |
Course Learning Outcomes: | 1. Generate dialogue in the target language at an intermediate level with a user of the language that expects a moderate ability and spontaneity using appropriate vocabulary and grammar. (1, 2, 3)

Course Competencies: | Competency 1 Demonstrate knowledge of intermediate grammatical features of American Sign Language (ASL) through role play
Competency 2 Implement expressive and receptive new targeted vocabulary comprehensively with previously learned vocabulary. Competency 3 Respond to unanticipated questions about familiar topics well beyond survival level. Competency 4 Identify universally held norms, values, and beliefs of members of the Deaf culture including appropriate and inappropriate behaviors for the hearing when interacting with the Deaf. |

A. Non manual behaviors B. Syntax C. Structure II. Expressive and receptive mastery of targeted vocabulary. A. Vocabulary from ASL 101/102 B. 400-600 additional vocabulary signs C. Appropriate signs for English words with multiple meanings D. Appropriate signs for English idiomatic phrases E. Basic ASL idioms III. Expressive and receptive response skills well above the survival level. A. Respond to unanticipated questions on familiar material B. Express opinions about familiar topics C.
