Catalog Course Description: Further development of receptive/expressive skills for communicating with deaf people in sign: fingerspelling, vocabulary, grammar, and culture.  
Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) a beginning level of proficiency as defined by the Arizona Languages Articulation Task Force. (1, 2, 3, 4)
2. Demonstrate the ability to describe objects, places, people, and events, express feelings/opinions, provide instructions, and narrate a series of events in several tenses using ASL. (1, 2, 3)
3. Analyze cultural aspects within ASL. (1,4,5)  
Course Competencies: Competency 1 Demonstrate intermediate expressive and receptive grammatical features of ASL.
Objective 1.1 Demonstrate simple sentence structure, using both receptive and expressive skills.
Objective 1.2 Demonstrate grammatical features of pronouns, nouns, verbs, negatives, adjectives, adverbs, classifiers, locatives, and temporal aspects.

Competency 2 Demonstrate expressive and receptive mastery of targeted vocabulary.
Objective 2.1 Demonstrate the parameters of fingerspelled words and descriptive classifiers in context.
Objective 2.2 Demonstrate the numbers, the alphabet, and a vocabulary of 800-1200 words using both receptive and expressive signing skills.

Competency 3 Demonstrate ability to communicate needs, commands, and questions with a fluent speaker of ASL.
Objective 3.1 Express basic needs and basic courtesy expressions in signed questions and statements.
Objective 3.2 Recombine learned vocabulary and structurally simple, formulaic statements and questions into simple but creative communication.
Objective 3.3 Initiate, conduct and terminate short conversations in ASL.
Objective 3.4 Demonstrate comprehensions of high/low-frequency terms in ASL.
Objective 3.5 Communicate, in ASL, short stories, narratives, and dialogues in ASL.

Competency 4 Assess components of deaf culture (i.e. physical, non-verbal, geographical).
Objective 4.1 Identify cultural norms, beliefs, and regional variations related to the deaf culture.
Objective 4.2 Identify key social and cultural traditions with the deaf community.
