Catalog Course Description: Develop basic receptive and expressive conversational skills, basic grammar and syntax and knowledge of the deaf community and deaf culture.  
Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Communicate in American Sign Language basic needs, commands, and questions using proper grammar and expression. (1,2,4,5)
2. Analyze cultural aspects within American Sign Language. (1,4,5)  
Course Competencies: Competency 1 Demonstrate basic grammatical features of American Sign Language (ASL).
Objective 1.1 Demonstrate simple sentence structure, using both receptive and expressive skills.
Objective 1.2 Demonstrate grammatical features of pronouns, nouns, verbs, negatives, adjectives, adverbs, and classifiers.

Competency 2 Demonstrate the use of basic ASL vocabulary.
Objective 2.1 Demonstrate the parameters of signing, i.e., hand shape, palm orientation, movement, location, non-manual signs, using both receptive and expressive skills.
Objective 2.2 Demonstrate the numbers, the alphabet, and a vocabulary of 400-600 words using both receptive and expressive fingerspelling skills.
Objective 2.3 Demonstrate basic receptive and expressive fingerspelling skills.
Objective 2.4 Apply visual receptive skills to comprehend frequently-used words and phrases, learned vocabulary and novel vocabulary words in context in questions, messages, descriptions, short narratives, and short dialogues containing some detail.

Competency 3 Demonstrate ability to communicate basic needs, commands, and questions with a fluent signer of ASL.
Objective 3.1 Demonstrate ability to apply receptive and expressive skills in a simple conversation in ASL.
Objective 3.2 Express basic needs and use basic courtesy expressions in simple signed questions and statements.
Objective 3.3 Demonstrate comprehension of high frequency words and phrases from simple signed questions, statements, commands and courtesy expressions.
Objective 3.4 Participate in beginning level ASL conversations with appropriate comprehension.

Competency 4 Assess components of deaf culture (i.e. physical, non-verbal, geographical).
Objective 4.1 Identify physical, geographical and non-verbal cultural information as each aspect relates to the deaf culture.
Objective 4.2 Identify how deaf culture relates to the arts.
Objective 4.3 Participate in components of the American Sign Language deaf culture (ie, language, behavioral norms, values, and traditions).
