Catalog Course Description: A study of the elements and principles of two-dimensional design, as a basis for visual art including graphics and photography. Emphasis on color theory, composition, and two-dimensional representation of space. Development of perception, analysis, imagination and expression through problem solving and critical evaluation is included.
Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Apply two dimensional design elements, principles, and vocabulary to evaluate the effectiveness of technique, form, content, and expression.(1,2,3,5,6)
2. Demonstrate an increasing aesthetic awareness. (1)

Course Competencies: Competency 1 Create compositions that emphasize specific assigned art elements
Objective 1.1 Define each element: line, shape, color, value, texture, space.
Objective 1.2 Create compositions that emphasize an effective application of specific elements of art
Objective 1.3 Apply appropriate media and techniques to emphasize each assigned element

Competency 2 Create works of art that demonstrate an increasing aesthetic awareness and direct attention to specific visual qualities.
Objective 2.1 Recognize and define a variety of visual qualities observed in the environment and in works of art.
Objective 2.2 Apply appropriate media and techniques to express visual qualities observed in the subject.
Objective 2.3 Articulate aesthetic qualities in critique of the work of self and others.
Objective 2.4 Critique specific observed visual qualities using appropriate vocabulary.
Objective 2.5 Evaluate the effectiveness of aesthetic decisions in works of art.

Competency 3 Create specific works that use the principles of hue, value, and intensity of color.
Objective 3.1 Paint twelve step color wheels at specific levels of value and saturation to demonstrate an understanding of the organization of hues into primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.
Objective 3.2 Mix assigned pigments to create specific hue, value and intensities of color in a variety of specific assigned compositions.
Objective 3.3 Paint compositions that demonstrate broad and narrow chromatic ranges with varied saturation.
Objective 3.4 Paint compositions using specific color schemes and concepts to produce specific expressive effects.
Objective 3.5 Paint compositional studies to demonstrate monochromatic, analogous, complementary, split complementary, triadic, and chromatic gray color schemes.
Objective 3.6 Paint compositional studies to demonstrate harmonic and disharmonic color schemes.
Objective 3.7 Use color keys, and thermal color to elicit specific stated content.
Objective 3.8 Use symbolic color to elicit specific stated content.

Competency 4 Create compositions designed to solve/complete specific assigned compositional problems focusing on two-dimensional design principles
Objective 4.1 Apply principles of movement, rhythm, unity/variety, balance, dominance/subordination, and economy, to express unique solutions to assigned compositional problems
Objective 4.2 Construct a composition using assigned materials that demonstrates an effective use of Gestalt Theory.
Objective 4.3 Design a composition using assigned materials that demonstrates the use of organization systems such as patterns and grids.
Objective 4.4 Create compositions using assigned materials that demonstrate an effective use of perceived space, mass, symmetrical, radial, and asymmetrical balance.
Objective 4.5 Construct compositions using assigned materials that demonstrate an effective use of scale and proportion.
Objective 4.6 Construct compositions using assigned materials that demonstrate an effective use of emphasis by means of isolation, contrast, and specific placement.
Objective 4.7 Construct compositions using assigned materials that create the illusion of space by means of linear, atmospheric, and rising perspective.
Objective 4.8 Construct compositions using assigned materials that create the illusion of space by means of overlapping, varied scale, and color space.
Objective 4.9 Construct compositions using assigned materials that create the illusion of movement by means of multiple images, the empathetic kinesthetic response and the decisive moment
Objective 4.10 Construct compositions using assigned materials that create a sense of movement by means of implied or inferred line, color space, or dominant and subordinated elements.
Objective 4.11 Apply critical and creative thinking techniques to produce unique and original solutions to assigned problems in design.
Objective 4.12 Use strategies for cultivating creativity, defining the parameters, and solving specific assigned problems.
Objective 4.13 Employ specific effective iconography, connections of shared experience, and resonance of form in specific works of art.
Objective 4.14 Apply convergent and divergent thinking techniques to the assigned studio problems to complete original and expressive compositions.

Competency 5 Evaluate the effectiveness of technique, form, and content in relation to specific intended outcomes.
Objective 5.1 Employ critical thinking techniques (such as visual inventory, gestalt, consideration of precedents, connection seeking, context transformation, convergent and divergent thinking) to evaluate the effectiveness of completed and in-process design assignments.
Objective 5.2 Critique works of art by employing key concepts of objective and subjective criticism.
Objective 5.3 Establish criteria, using key concepts such as description, cause and effect, compare and contrast, potential and reorganization to provide useful feedback.
