Description: Advanced techniques of furniture upholstery for students interested in entering the upholstery trade; modern production techniques for sewing; stuffing; and finishing; job estimating; equipment selection and maintenance.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe the types of shops in which furniture upholstery is done and how modern production techniques may be applied in each setting. (I)
2. List the advantages and disadvantages of owning a business and describe the basic considerations in starting a small business. (I)
3. Calculate labor and material costs involved in pricing common upholstery jobs. (II)
4. Identify and describe the factors to be considered when selecting an upholstery sewing machine. (III)
5. Demonstrate the basic maintenance and repair procedures required to keep a sewing machine operating properly. (III)
6. Describe the recommended uses for coil springs and the method for tying and fastening. (IV)
7. Describe advanced sewing and finishing techniques required for special design or angle cushions. (V)
8. Complete quality upholstery projects using the advanced techniques taught in class. (IV, V, VI)
9. List and describe the steps involved in the restoration or redesign of upholstered pieces. (VII)
