Description: Provides review of phlebotomy theory fundamental knowledge, and advanced concepts required for phlebotomy national certification examinations. Topics include anatomy and physiology, specimen collection, specimen processing and handling, non-blood specimens, and laboratory operations related to phlebotomy.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Identify and summarize composition of blood, human anatomy, the circulatory and body systems. (I)
2. Define and report the procedures used to identify patients, select site, conduct venipuncture, and transport and process specimens. (I-V)
3. Review and summarize collection, handling, and processing of non-blood specimens. (III, IV)
4. Use standard and special precautions to identify and describe infection control processes. (III)
5. Identify and explain required and recommended quality control and quality assurance measures for blood collection and specimen processing. (III-V)
6. Summarize and interpret issues with liability, legal considerations, professional ethics in the workplace, and standard of care. (V)
