Description: Provides an overview of diabetes in the pediatric population. Epidemiology and etiology, types of diabetes in children and symptom recognition, medication and diet management, complications, new technological devices, and family interventions.

1. Examine the incidence of the diabetes in the pediatric population in the United States. (I,III)
2. Explain the etiology of diabetes in pediatrics in terms of genetics, autoimmunity and environmental factors. (I,III)
3. Distinguish between the old classification versus the new terminology of diabetes as determined by the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control. (I,II)
4. Describe the diagnostic criteria that are utilized in defining diabetes in pediatrics. (II,IV)
5. Differentiate between the symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia in the pediatric patient. (II,V)
6. Analyze management of acute diabetic complications in a pediatric patient. (VI)
7. Predict chronic complications of diabetes in the pediatric population. (II,V)
8. Describe medication management with insulin and oral medications for diabetes in a pediatric patient. (IV,V,VI)
9. Describe and discuss new technologies such as glucose monitoring devices and insulin pumps for managing diabetes in a pediatric patient. (VI,VII)
10. Describe how diet and physical activity impacts the diabetic child. (VI,VII)
11. Explain the strategies and challenges involved in teaching parents and care givers about the care of the diabetic child. (VI,VII)
