Description: Designed for students who are learning English as a second language. Instruction for more advanced vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.

MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Apply syllabication rules to pronounce words accurately. (I) 2. Identify root words, suffixes, and prefixes. (II) 3. Use context clues to define unfamiliar words. (II) 4. Distinguish between standard and nonstandard language usage. (III) 5. Determine when a main idea is stated or implied in written material. (IV) 6. Identify details that support stated and implied main ideas. (IV) 7. Write simple summaries for selected reading passages. (IV) 8. Use the information provided for word entries in a standard English dictionary. (V)
