Description: Introduction to stage properties including design, construction and maintenance features. Provides skills in property design and construction using an assortment of standard materials.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Outline the individuals to be included when assessing the props needed for a new theatre production. (I)
2. Identify and evaluate proper hand and set props commonly used in theatre production. (I, II)
3. Execute a sound budget for procuring stage props commonly used in theatre production. (III)
4. Organize an effective schedule for the use of stage props. (IV)
5. Outline the tools and workshop requirements necessary for prop construction. (IV, V)
6. Identify and report on the professional Health and Safety standards that must be adhered to during the prop construction process. (VI)
7. Demonstrate appropriate woodworking techniques used when constructing props. (VII)
8. Construct props using clay molding techniques and other similar materials. (VII)
9. Develop an assortment of props while working with polystyrene. (VII)
10. Produce a number of stage props using traditional upholstery techniques (VII)
11. Demonstrate working with soft steel in order to construct a variety of stage props. (VII)
12. Complete a series of props using proper painting techniques including, gilding and other finishes. (VIII)
13. Design a plan for acquiring props from external vendors, including props for rental or purchase. (IX)
14. Demonstrate proper maintenance techniques for props throughout the entire production process. (X)
