Description: Systematic methods of increasing vocabulary by emphasizing the most important affixes, Latin, and Greek roots. Content analysis techniques. Common foreign words and phrases used in English. Specialized vocabularies of areas of study and interest. Interpretation of information in dictionary entries. Examination ofwords frequently confused and misused. College preparatory level



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Interpret labels used to identify definitions in a dictionary. (I)
2. Select the appropriate definition in a dictionary entry for given words in context. (I)
3. Use synonyms given in the dictionary to determine appropriate synonyms for given words. (I)
4. Use structural analysis of prefixes, roots, and suffixes to define given words. (II)
5. Use contextual clues to define given words. (III)
6. Identify common foreign terms and phrases. (IV)
7. Select correct term appropriate to the context of given homonyms and similar words. (V)
8. Define vocabulary words associated with specialized fields of study and areas of interest. (VI)
