Subject Type: Occupational
Load Formula: S

Description: Technique of ultrasound-guided peripheral venous access. Client selection for procedure, selection of vasculature, and troubleshooting using ultrasound guidance equipment. Use of equipment and hands-on, simulated practice of catheter placement.

MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe indications when ultrasound vein cannulation would be beneficial. (I)
2. Describe the anatomy of the vasculature of the upper extremity. (I, II)
3. Discuss the client populations who would benefit from Ultrasound inserted intravenous cannulation. (I, II)
4. Practice the proper insertion techniques used for Ultrasound guided vein cannulation. (II, III)
5. Demonstrate how to use the ultrasound equipment on the upper extremity in selecting usable veins. (III, IV)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies. MCCCD faculty retains authority in determining the pedagogical approach, methodology, content sequencing, and assessment metrics for student work. Please see individual course syllabi for additional information, including specific course requirements.
