Description: Clinical application of nursing theory to the maternal/child patient. Focuses on effective physical assessment techniques, determining neonatal status, and maternal physiological and psychological well-being.

MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Demonstrate maternal assessment techniques by performing a head-to-toe physical assessment on a maternity patient. (I) 2. Describe proper assessment techniques to identify the primary postpartum psychological complications. (I) 3. Identify the critical elements of neonatal assessment. (II) 4. Demonstrate the nursing process through the creation of a nursing plan of care by applying data collection knowledge as it pertains to the maternal/child patient. (I, II, III) 5. Demonstrate family-centered care in the hospital setting by providing comprehensive nursing care for the maternity patient and her newborn. (I, II, III) 6. Demonstrate safe administration of medications for maternal/child patients. (III) 7. Describes the critical elements of discharge teaching for the maternity patient. (III)
