Description: Comprehensive health assessment foundation. Development of interviewing skills, obtaining health histories, and conducting physical examinations on the school-age child. Identification and management of minor illnesses and health problems common to school age children

1. Identify the role of health assessment in the nursing process. (I)
2. Demonstrate the use of the nursing process with consideration of the clients` medical diagnosis in the performance of a health assessment. (I, II)
3. Demonstrate the use of the Subjective data\226Objective data\226 Assessment\226Plan\226Intervention\226Evaluation.(SOAPIE) format in the documentation of health assessments. (II)
4. Identify age appropriate interviewing techniques for each age group of the school-age child. (III)
5. Demonstrate appropriate documentation of age specific health histories for selected cases. (II, III)
6. Demonstrate the appropriate use of clinical diagnostic tools. (III)
7. Demonstrate the appropriate techniques of inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation. (III)
8. Demonstrate the use of the SOAPIE format in the documentation of health assessment of the integumentary system (skin, hair and nails) and the head and neck. (IV)
9. Identify abnormal findings on the physical exam of the integumentary system, head and neck. (IV)
10. Demonstrate the use of the SOAPIE format in the documentation of health assessment of the chest, lungs, and cardiovascular system. (IV)
11. Identify abnormal findings on physical examination of the chest, lungs, and cardiovascular system. (IV).
12. Demonstrate the use of the SOAPIE format in the documentation of health assessment of the breasts, axillae, abdomen and musculoskeletal muscles. (IV)
13. Identify abnormal findings on physical examination assessment of the breasts, axillae, abdomen and musculoskeletal muscles. (IV)
14. Demonstrate the use of the SOAPIE format in the documentation of health assessment of the genitourinary and neurological systems. (IV)
15. Identify abnormal findings on physical examination assessment of the genitourinary and neurological systems. (IV)
16. Identify signs and symptoms of common acute illness and common health problems of the school-age child. (V, VI)
17. Identify assessment criteria which indicate a need for appropriate interdisciplinary collaboration in the management of the school-age child`s illness or health problem. (VII)
