Description: The role of the school health assistant. Legal issues related to the school health setting. Performance of vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings. Documentation, vital signs, triage guidelines in the school health setting. Common diseases that affect school-age children. Child abuse issues and protocol. Common medications and their side effects. Documentation and procedures related to drug administration

1. Describe the role and scope of the school health assistant in the school health setting. (I)
2. Explain specific legal issues encountered in the school health setting to include confidentiality, guardianship issues, and the emancipated minor. (I)
3. Explain specific, interpersonal issues in the school health setting to include teamwork, phone skills, and the implications of cultural variations within the school population. (II)
4. Describe the proper methods involved in performing vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings as well as the department of Health Services immunization procedures and documentation. (III)
5. Demonstrate the proper measurement of blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature and identify abnormal values using vital sign measurement equipment. (IV)
6. Define specific health terminology and abbreviations related to the school environment. (V)
7. Describe the development and utilization of care plans in the school setting. (VI)
8. Identify and describe communicable and chronic diseases encountered in the school setting. (VII)
9. Describe triage guidelines followed in the school setting for acute emergencies, accidents, and bomb threats. (VIII)
10. Describe the protocols utilized in the identification of victims of child abuse. (IX)
11. Identify common pharmacological agents and expected side effects encountered in the school health setting. ( X)
12. Demonstrate specific methods of drug administration for the school-age child and complete the required documentation. (X)
