Description: Role and responsibilities of the Licensed Practical Nurse. Application of nursing care for medical-surgical patients, use of the nursing process and administration of medications. Includes expanded role of the Licensed Practical Nurse, principles of safe nursing practice, legal/ethical issues, human growth and development, therapeutic communication and physical assessment skills. For Licensed Practical Nurses returning to active nursing in the acute care setting.

1. Compare and contrast the historical role of nursing and the current functions of the Licensed Practical Nurse. (I)
2. Describe the current role of the Licensed Practical Nurse in the acute care setting. (I)
3. Demonstrate nursing consistent with the current role of Licensed Practical Nurse. (I)
4. Describe the pathophysiology associated with specific Medical-Surgical health problems. (II)
5. Explain pathophysiology involved with selected patients. (II)
6. Formulate and use a plan of nursing care, based on the nursing process, for selected patients. (III)
7. Describe and demonstrate the specific skills involved with a total patient assessment. (IV)
8. Describe principles and rationale for specific nursing procedures and perform them safely. (IV)
9. Describe the Licensed Practical Nurse`s role in patient education and participate in health promotion/patient education programs. (IV)
10. Explain age-related factors regarding provision of nursing care and incorporate them into specific nursing plan of care. (V)
11. Explain therapeutic communication and use those skills in the clinical setting. (VI)
12. Describe basic principles related to safe administration of medications, including knowledge of common drug categories. (VII)
13. Administer medications to patients in a consistently safe manner. (VII)
14. Describe legal/ethical issues in contemporary nursing and identify them in the clinical setting. (VIII)
15. Describe special needs of diverse population groups and address specific needs in the clinical setting. (IX)
16. Describe nursing skills associated with emergency health problems and utilize those skills in clinical emergency situations. (X)
17. List principles of nutrition and apply them to specific patients. (XI)
18. Describe the role of the Licensed Practical Nurse in Intravenous Therapy and demonstrate calculation of flow rate and assessing patients response in the clinical setting. (XII)
19. Describe nursing principles related to pre-operative and post-operative patients and apply them in the clinical setting. (XIII)
