Description: Students explore the intellectual, social, emotional, developmental, and educational characteristics of gifted and talented students.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe principles of human development and the nature of the individual, especially as applied to exceptional abilities. (I)
2. Explain the unique potential of gifted and talented students from special populations. (II)
3. Describe the cognitive, social, emotional, and environmental factors that enhance or inhibit the development of giftedness in all populations. (III)
4. Explain the influence of the social, cultural, political, and economic factors in gifted education. (IV)
5. Define current trends and issues in the field of gifted education. (V)
6. Identify varying teaching styles and instructional strategies for gifted and talented students to meet their diverse needs. (VI)
7. Describe ways to develop in gifted and talented students the attitudes and skills needed to become independent, life-long learners, to self-evaluate, and to set and pursue appropriate personal and academic goals for future success. (VII)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies. MCCCD faculty retains authority in determining the pedagogical approach, methodology, content sequencing, and assessment metrics for student work.
