Load Formula: S

Description: Principles of periodontology; etiology, microbiology, pathogenesis, classification and characteristics of healthy and diseased periodontal tissues. Surgical treatment of periodontal disease and the effects of dental hygiene therapy, surgical techniques and maintenance therapy. Evaluation of the scientific literature and multi-media resources are used extensively

MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe and diagram the histological structures of the periodontium and its supporting structures in health and disease. (I)
2. Describe the microbiological composition and major pathogens of dental plaque and its role in the development of gingivitis and periodontal disease. (II)
3. Explain the systemic processes of inflammation, immunity, repair and regeneration within the context of total health, including their specific roles in periodontal disease. (III)
4. Compare the immune system in healthy and immunocompromised individuals and its role in the etiology of gingivitis and periodontitis. (IV)
5. Explain the pathogenesis and indices of gingivitis and periodontal disease. (V)
6. Explain reattachment and new attachment as goals of periodontal therapy. (VI)
7. Specify the rationale for supportive periodontal therapy. (VII)
8. Differentiate the clinical, radiographic and microscopic features of the various forms of periodontal disease. (VIII)
9. Explain the role of chemotherapeutic agents in the treatment of periodontal disease. (IX)
10. Assess the status of a periodontally-involved clinic client on a cellular level, detailing their status from health to disease. (I,-IX)
11. Explain periodontal surgical procedures and treatment plans which may be necessary subsequent to dental hygiene therapy. (X, XI)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies. MCCCD faculty retains authority in determining the pedagogical approach, methodology, content sequencing, and assessment metrics for student work. Please see individual course syllabi for additional information, including specific course requirements.
