Description: Tables, charts, and scales on the framing square; methods of determining brace lengths and angle cuts; step-off method of figuring rafter length; framing components that make up a variety of different roofs; decimal conversion; backing and lowering hip rafter; laying out a rafter given a slope and a span; conversion between pitch and slope; using a speed square



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Read and apply all tables, charts, and scales on the framing square. (I)
2. Identify specific roof types and their component parts. (II,III)
3. Layout a common rafter. (IV)
4. Given the slope of a roof, convert to pitch; given the pitch of a roof, convert to slope. (IV)
5. Convert measurements between decimal representation and feet and inches representation. IV)
6. Step-off a rafter length given a slope and a span. (V)
7. Layout a hip, valley, hip jack or valley jack rafter, (V)
8. Determine ridge lengths using the framing square. (VI)
9. Read and apply the scales on a speed square. (VI)
