Description: Development of communication skills important in establishing and maintaining effective helping relationships. Emphasis on rapport building, effective listening skills, appropriate feedback and the helping process



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe the counseling process and the stages of progression a paraprofessional counselor. (I)
2. Explain the difference between paraprofessional counseling, interviewing, and psychotherapy. (II)
3. Demonstrate necessary skills for establishing and maintaining a helping relationship. (III)
4. Demonstrate the ability to establish rapport. (III, IV)
5. Use necessary skills for effective listening. (IV)
6. Identify non-verbal communications and their implications. (IV)
7. Demonstrate the following skills: confronting, self-disclosure and dealing with resistant clients. (IV)
8. Identify the various counseling settings. (V)
9. Demonstrate the ability to provide appropriate feedback. (VI)
10. Demonstrate the ability to receive and act upon feedback from peers. (VI)
