Description: Application of communication skills important in establishing and maintaining effective helping relationships. Emphasis on rapport building, effective listening skills, appropriate feedback and the helping process.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Employ communication skills that facilitate the helping process. (I)
2. Demonstrate the ability to phrase questions which probe for missing experiences, behaviors, and feelings in a given client situation. (I)
3. Demonstrate the initial phase of the counseling process, including building rapport, identifying presenting problem, planning and crisis intervention. (II)
4. Demonstrate the middle phase of the counseling process, including developing, implementing and evaluating goals. (II)
5. Demonstrate the termination phase of the counseling process, including providing evaluations, referrals and follow-up, as needed. (II)
6. Apply appropriate helping techniques to achieve identified goals. (I, II)
7. Evaluate and respond appropriately to a crisis situation. (II)
8. Determine if and when to refer the client and describe basic termination issues related to the situation. (II, III)
9. Evaluate special issues in the counseling process and apply appropriate behavior for handling them. (III)
10. Demonstrate ability to give appropriate feedback. (IV)
11. Demonstrate ability to receive and act on feedback from supervisors and peers. (IV)
12. Describe legal and ethical issues that impact the paraprofessional counselor. (V)
13. List cultural considerations which affect the counseling process. (VI)
